The Ocean Between Us (a giveaway)

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Big Honcho Media asking if I’d like to give away a copy of a newly released book, The Ocean Between Us along with a little extra somethin’, somethin’.

Knowing how busy I am, I asked my sister-in-law to read the book and write a review for me (how lucky am I!?!?) because I didn’t want to give away a book I hadn’t read.  I am reading it now and it’s fantastic so far.  Susan Wiggs has stepped into the heart of the military family and actually learned the proper lingo.  Really, it’s fantastic!  Enough rambling from me though, I’ll let my sister-in-law take it away…

There are thousands of books depicting heroic deeds of the men and women in our military, The Ocean Between Us focuses instead on the trials and tribulations that the brave military wives and families endure while their husbands, boyfriends, fathers or sons are deployed for several months at a time.  It is not a book that paints the military family life as a fairytale, but rather a realistic depiction of life that goes on while their loved ones are away.  As someone who has been on the home-front as my brother deployed, the author’s vivid imagery brought me back to those moments and relating to the emotions of the characters.  The story follows three different military wives, whose lives cross when they are relocated to a Naval Air Station outside Seattle, Washington.  Each one of them is trying to define her role as a military wife, essential to the success of her husband’s career, yet having an innate desire to have an independent status of their own.  Through a tangled web of heartache, doubt, fear, devotion, rebellion and loyalty, the Bennett family manages to stay afloat while their father is at sea.

Excellent review, lil’sis.  Please visit the author’s website to learn more about her and how she came up with the idea for the book.

Now, on to the even better stuff. Big Honcho Media is offering 3 prizes:

First Place Winner will receive a $50 Visa Gift Card and a copy of the book, The Ocean Between Us.
Second and Third Place Winners will receive a copy of the book.

All you have to do to enter the contest is tell me the title of the last book you read and if you’d recommend it to others.  It can be a children’s book… a coffee table book, a romance, a thriller.  I’m a bookworm… I’m curious!

Full Disclosure: This giveaway is provided by Big Honcho Media.  Love ya’ll!

  • Please enter me :) I finished “Love Mercy” by Lisa Samson and her daughter Ty over the weekend (about their mission trip to Africa) and am now reading “Green Mama” by Tracey Bianchi. It’s really good so far.

  • Thanks for this awesome chance!! God Bless! Tina

The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. A good read.

    • Delta Whiskey

Oh, I wish I could tell you how much I love Nicholas Sparks! Such a talented author. Have you read A Bend in the Road? FANTASTIC!

  • What a fun giveaway Cat! The last book I ready was “The Actor and the Housewife”. It was a super fun read and this book looks really inspiring!

  • Julie Waasted

The time travelers wife. Great book this was my 2nd reading of it. I think the 2nd read was better than the first.

  • Empress by K. Miller. It’s rather crude, it’s weird, it’s gory and violent, sometimes confusing. The heroine is crass and belligerent, often more of the antagonist than the protagonist. I liked it, and I’ll read the series, but unless you’re a big sci-fi/fantasy fan, I’d not recommend it. (If you don’t mind explicit sex scenes, I’d recommend the Kushiel’s Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey instead. Intrigue, drama, love and sex. Bombshell.)

  • I recently finished “Dear John” by Nicholas Sparks. I loved it, so much better than the movie!

    • Delta Whiskey

Yes, the book is quite different isn’t it? Objectively, I liked both… just wish I didn’t know the movie was based off the book.

  • The last book that I read was Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. (I know, I know…) I actually would recommend it to others!

    • Delta Whiskey

Okay. So, confession… I read all of the Twilight books too. Admittedly, they are good literary gems. Taken the advice of others and NOT watched the movies though.

  • Jessica

Who Moved My Cheese! it was an assignment for a Human Relations class….it’s interesting, not riveting.

  • The book I just finished is called, I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced. By Nujood Ali with Delphine Minoui. This book was a real, heartbreaking depection of the typical life in Yemen for young girls. The title pretty mcuh gives it away! I don’t want to give the details away, the books is pretty short, I finished in in a few hours, but well worth it!

  • Charity

Currently reading “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” I’m starting my 4th time through the series. So, yeah I’d recommend them! =) (Even though the movies are different from the books, I like them too.)

    • Delta Whiskey

You know, the books are better than the movies, but the movies are not ones that I get all irritated because they took literary liberty with. They stay pretty close… (I love them too!)

  • Jennifer

The last book I read was “Dear John”. I really enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it. Have yet to watch the movie. Waiting for it to be released on netflix…hopefully it’ll be out before our PCS to the UK.

I am re-reading Plantation by Dorothea Benton Frank. Its easy reading and a book that can take me away from the daily routines and visualize myself living in the South!!!

  • The last book I read was The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. It was a good read — and I would recommend it to people, especially if they are looking for something light and easy going, as most of his stuff is. I did see the movie AFTER reading the book, and it didnt compare. They never do. The book was so much better.

Wasnt my favorite book [To Kill A Mockingbird will always hold that title] but it was good.

  • I’m just starting Confessions of a Military Spouse by Mollie Gross. I met her at SpouseBuzz Live at Nellis AFB and she was very warm and funny.

  • Michelle Simpson

Can you enter me and my son Dylan, He would love this book.

    • Michelle Simpson

Didnt read the instructions correctly, Sorry. My last book was the appeal by John Grisham and Dylan has downloaded again the Notebook on his Ipod.
